Homemade German Chocolate Cake

Beloved for its moist, decadent layers of chocolate cake and the unique coconut-pecan frosting, German Chocolate Cake is a favorite dessert. The cake was not actually created in Germany but rather in the United States by Samuel German, a baker who developed a kind of dark baking chocolate during the 1800s. Consequenty, this particular dessert has an American origin; it is popularly made in American homes because it has rich tastes that make one feel good.

A handmade German Chocolate Cake though is more than just a cake: it demands attention to detail and excellent ingredients. Typically, the cocoa powder or melted chocolate used as the base gives the batter a deep flavor while creating soft crumbs. To differentiate from other forms of chocolate cakes, German Chocolate Cake incorporates buttermilk into its mixture; thus adding moisture and tartness to balance out sweet flavors from frostings.

Nevertheless, the frosting is what makes German Chocolate Cake distinct from other cakes. It is composed of evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and chopped pecans and cooked until it thickens to a caramel-like consistency. The mixture has some shredded coconut added to it which gives it some chewiness as well as tropical mildness that makes it even tastier. When cold, the frostings are coated between the layers of cake and all over the top leaving an incredible finish on the cake that blends with chocolate.

Indeed, homemade German Chocolate Cake is more than a simple dessert; it is an embodiment of culinary artistry and everlasting appeal for flavors from years back.
