The origins of this dish can be traced back to the hearty meals prepared by Amish families, who often rely on simple, wholesome ingredients. By incorporating mushrooms and thyme, this version adds an earthy depth that complements the creamy gravy and tender beef patties. It’s a perfect dish for those looking to enjoy a comforting meal that feels both familiar and new.
This hearty bake pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables, providing a crisp contrast to the creamy, savory flavors of the dish. A glass of red wine, such as a Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, would complement the earthy notes of the mushrooms and thyme beautifully.

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake with Mushrooms and Thyme
Servings: 4

Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups milk
4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and thyme. Form the mixture into 4 patties.
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are soft.
Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine. Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until the mixture thickens into a gravy.
Layer the sliced potatoes and onions in a greased baking dish.
Place the browned patties on top of the potato and onion layer.
Pour the mushroom gravy over the entire dish, ensuring everything is well coated.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the foil, sprinkle the cheddar cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Variations & Tips
For a lighter version, you can substitute ground turkey for the beef. Add a splash of white wine to the gravy for an extra layer of flavor. If you prefer a spicier dish, incorporate a pinch of cayenne pepper into the beef mixture. For a gluten-free option, use cornstarch instead of flour to thicken the gravy.
