A handmade German Chocolate Cake though is more than just a cake: it demands attention to detail and excellent ingredients. Typically, the cocoa powder or melted chocolate used as the base gives the batter a deep flavor while creating soft crumbs. To differentiate from other forms of chocolate cakes, German Chocolate Cake incorporates buttermilk into its mixture; thus adding moisture and tartness to balance out sweet flavors from frostings.

Nevertheless, the frosting is what makes German Chocolate Cake distinct from other cakes.
